Motorola have long been the name in walkie-talkies, or two-way radios as they should perhaps be called. The TLKR T7 are aimed at those who want to stay in contact in harsh environments, with the box suitably adorned with skiers, snowboarders and the like.

In the box you get the two handsets themselves, a docking station for charging those two handsets, belt clips and battery packs.

The base charges the handsets directly when they are slotted in, but you also have the option of charging the battery packs separately, for example if you have more than one pack. You could also use four standard AAA batteries to power a handset, which is a nice fallback should the worst happen.

The handsets aren’t the smallest around, but they are suitably rugged. Measuring 54x 30 x 202 (including the aerial) they sit comfortably in the hand, with the rubber surround providing a secure grip in gloved or wet hands. The push-to-talk button on the left-hand side seems to fall naturally under the thumb or forefinger of whichever hand you are holding them in.

A small 1-inch LCD screen sits on the front, which is large enough to convey all the relevant information and lets you see which channel you are on, what options are selected and so on. Below this screen is a range of control buttons which are too small for operating with gloves, but it is most likely that you’d set these things up before setting out.

The handsets have 8 channels with 121 subcodes, which will have to be the same before setting out. But this is a sophisticated device, so should the need arise, you can set Dual Watch, which will cover two separate channels – perhaps as a control station for two opposing factions in a team game.

Channel setting is easy directly through the menu, or using the scan feature that will zip through and pause on transmitting channels. When you hit the right channel, a button press exits the scan leaving you connected (to someone at least).

The menus present a whole array of advanced features that many will never use, but they do make the T7 a highly versatile choice of walkie-talkie. You can set a room monitor mode (like a baby monitor), silent mode (with vibration alerting) as well as a timer.

There are also a range of group functions which do take some time to get used to, but will allow you to individually name each handset, which comes in handy as you can use the T7 for direct calling of other users in your group, as well as transmitting to the entire group. Caller ID is a real bonus when working in larger groups too.

You’ll also be able to opt for handsfree operation, meaning you don’t have to push the button to communicate, although you’ll need to buy an additional headset to make this possible. The VOX option can then be selected in the menus, as well as setting the sensitivity level, so it will respond to positive voice signals, but not laboured breathing for example.

The battery life is also really impressive, giving you about 18 hours from the battery pack, or 20 hours from AAA batteries, so it is not only flexible, but performs well too.

The great thing about the T7 though is the quality of voice transmission, which came over loud and clear and free from interference. Neat features like the roger beep that let you know the other person has finished transmitting make them simple to use and with plenty of volume, so if your handset is stuffed in a rucksack pocket, you’ll still be able to hear it.

The T7 are rated to 10km in perfect conditions, which of course will depend very much on terrain and so on. Built-up areas will reduce this significantly, so don’t think about ditching your mobile phone, but for group activities outdoors you should be within range.

On the outside it sports a thin slider design in progressive black, cosmic silver, or energetic red. Its front face is dominated by a 2.6-inch display, which should lend itself well to watching everything from music videos to movies. You’ll also find a desk stand (very nice!) and stereo speakers.

And just to prove that miracles do happen, Sony Ericsson broke down and included a 3.5mm headset jack. We’re not sure what made the company change its mind, but we couldn’t care less.

The W995’s Walkman player offers the standard range of features, including album art, shake control, TrackID, and an adjustable bass level. You’ll also be able to save MP3 and AAC files as ring tones. The 8.1-megapixel camera is straight out of a Cyber-shot line. It has a 16x digital zoom, auto-focus, face detection, a flash, image stabilization, Sony’s PictBridge, a video recorder, and picture blogging.

Finishing out the feature set are stereo Bluetooth, assisted-GPS with support for Google Maps, Wi-Fi, messaging and e-mail, a voice recorder, an FM radio, phone-as-modem capability, USB mass storage, PC syncing, instant messaging, organizer applications, a speakerphone, gaming, and direct access to YouTube.

With so much under the hood, it’s imperative Sony Ericsson backs it all up with solid battery life and memory. Fortunately, the W995’s specs look promising. Its Memory Stick Micro slot will accommodate cards up to 8GB, the internal memory is 118MB, and Sony Ericsson promises that the W995’s battery life will be long enough to support two full-length films (9 hours talk time, 20 hours music time and 5 hours video time).

The W995 will be available in the second quarter of this year for an undisclosed price. The W955 will be quad-band GSM (850/900/1800/1900) and dual-band UMTS (900/2100), while the W995a will be quad-band GSM and tri-band UMTS (850/1900/2100). The latter is formatted for the North American market.

Key Features:

* Brushed metal body parts
* Quad-band GSM, dual-band HSDPA
* 2.6? 256K-color TFT display of QVGA resolution
* 8.1 megapixel camera with autofocus, LED flash, geo-tagging, face detection
* WQVGA video recording at 30fps
* Built-in GPS with A-GPS functionality
* Wi-Fi with DLNA support
* Bluetooth (with A2DP) and USB v2.0
* Accelerometer sensor
* 118MB of internal memory and M2 memory expansion (8GB card included)
* Stereo speakers
* 3.5 mm audio jack
* Kickstand
* Walkman 4.0 music player with Shake control and SensMe
* FM radio with RDS
* Multi-tasking support
* Smart dialing
* Comfortable keypad, nice sliding mechanism

Main disadvantages:

* Video recording limited to WQVGA
* No lens protection
* No DivX/XviD video support (though it’s touted as a video-centric phone)
* Kickstand construction could’ve been more reliable
* No office document viewer

Sony Ericsson Aino is without a doubt one entertaining slider. It does pretty much all the stuff the other Sony Ericsson feature phones do, but does it better. It brings in some heavy multimedia firepower such as a PS3-inspired touch menu, a large 3-inch touchscreen, VGA@30fps video recording.

Of course, Wi-Fi and GPS are also in the mix to make the device that much more tempting. The Remote Play feature, initially developed for PSP, enables users to control and access media content on Playstation 3 from their phone.
Unfortunately, we don’t really find the Sony Ericsson Aino exterior breathtaking. It rather takes a somewhat conservative approach and an unassuming touch-only look, when it’s not opened.
Sony Ericsson Aino at a glance:

* General: GSM 850/900/1800/1900 MHz, UMTS 850/900/2100, GPRS/EDGE class 10, HSDPA 7.2 Mbps, HSUPA, 2 Mbps
* Form factor: Touchscreen slider
* Dimensions: 104 x 50 x 15.5 mm, 134 g
* Display: 3-inch 16M color TFT display, 240 x 432 pixel resolution
* Memory: 55MB integrated memory, hot-swappable microSD card slot (up to 16GB)
* UI: Proprietary Flash-based UI
* Still camera: 8 megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash, touch focus, geo-tagging, face detection, smile detection, image stabilizer, smart contrast
* Video recording: VGA video recording at 30 fps
* Connectivity: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP, GPS receiver with A-GPS support
* Misc:Partial touchscreen functionality, accelerometer for screen auto rotate, FM radio with RDS, Remote play for Playstation 3
* Battery: 1000 mAh battery

The Sony Ericsson Aino is the first phone by Sony Ericsson to sport a widescreen and touchscreen display. Yes, the 3-inch screen is actually touch-enabled but only in the multimedia part of the menu and the camera interface.

The 8 megapixel camera is all there as well, so you can bet you get all the goodies that Sony Ericsson can offer in one single device.
The Sony Ericsson Aino

Well, the Sony Ericsson Aino is in our lab right now and it’s ready for some pre-release action. There are limitations of course – for instance, the camera is nowhere near proper working condition, but there’s plenty of time ahead of market release. We really hope to get a better working unit.

But let’s not keep you waiting any longer. Head on to the next page for our hands-on scoop of the Sony Ericsson Aino hardware and ergonomics.

The LG Viewty Smart is a massively upgraded version of the original Viewty. Its feature list includes a 480×800 hi-res 3 inch touchscreen running LG’s new S-Class 3D user interface, a brilliant 8 megapixel camera with autofocus and a quality lens, music player, FM radio, A-GPS, 1.5GB memory, WiFi and HSDPA. All this is a slimline and lightweight modern-looking phone makes this a winner!
The LG Viewty Smart (or Viewty 2) is an upgraded version of the immensely popular LG Viewty, and is very similar to the LG Arena, except that the Viewty Smart has an upgraded 8 megapixel camera. Here at Mobile Phones UK we loved the Viewty and the Arena, so it will come as no surprise that we are awarding the Viewty Smart 5 stars too.

The Viewty Smart looks much more like the Arena than the original Viewty. It’s a slimmer, curvier form, with metallic accents that give it a very “2009″ look. And it’s entirely touchscreen driven, with just one button on the front face. But LG’s new S-Class 3D user interface, based around a rotating cube concept, makes it very easy to use. One of the highlights of this phone has to be the amazing LCD display, which has an ultra-high resolution of 480 x 800 pixels and a huge 3 inch diagonal. It’s a brilliant platform for running the capacitive touch-display, and also for viewing photos and videos.

This brings us on to the next highlight of the device: the 8 megapixel camera. This is a stunner too. As you are probably aware, the quality of a camera is not determined simply by the number of megapixels, but by the quality of the optics. The Viewty Smart delivers the optics to match the resolution, with its Schneider Kreuznach lens, and can take photos that match the best from Nokia, and can give Sony Ericsson a run for their money too. The camera is equipped with autofocus and an LED flash, and also features a new Intelligent Shot Mode that analyses the subject, background, and lighting conditions and compares the data against seven pre-programmed scenarios in order to take the “perfect” picture. It’s taking point-and-shoot to the next level, and does make it easy to get great shots. It’s not going to make you the next David Bailey, but as far as point-and-shoot photography goes, we think that this will match most dedicated digital cameras, at least in good lighting conditions. The camera can also record video at up to 120 frames per second, which means that you can playback in slow motion for special effect. Video calling is also available.

The music player handles all common formats, and the video player can play DivX/XviD formats too. Dolby Mobile provides the best quality audio, and an FM radio is included too. But for reasons unknown, the 3.5mm audio jack and FM transmitter that appeared in the LG Arena have not been included in the Viewty Smart.

A-GPS is included however, as well as full connectivity with WiFi, Bluetooth and USB.

The available user memory is a huge 1.5GB and the phone has a microSD card clot that will accept cards up to 32GB, so there is certainly no shortage of storage capacity.

Battery capacity is typical for this type of phone. Heavy users will probably need to charge on a daily basis, and we would anticipate that anyone who is lucky enough to own one of these beauties is going to make good use of it!

The Viewty Smart is a big step up from the original Viewty. LG have improved the camera, the screen, the user interface, the memory and have added WiFi and A-GPS. And they’ve made it smaller and lighter at the same time! The battery life may have suffered as a result, but we can’t fail to be impressed by the strides that LG are making in the touchscreen arena. And speaking of the Arena, the two phones are very similar: choose the Viewty Smart if the 8 megapixel camera appeals, and choose the Arena if the the 3.5mm audio jack and FM transmitter are more important to you.
Features of the LG Viewty Smart include:

* 8 megapixel camera with Schneider Kreuznach lens, autofocus and LED flash
* Video recording (QVGA, 120fps) & video calling
* Display: TFT LCD, 480 x 800 pixels (3.0 inches) touchscreen with accelerometer
- You have taken some pictures with your camera that you don’t want to show up in the Gallery in the phone, so however looks in the phone can see them.

- You have photos attached to your contacts that you don’t want to take unnessesary space in the Gallery application.

- Other reasons I don’t want to think of….;-)

Plug-in add:
Y-Browser BtObex sender plug-in, version 088(English)
Y-Browser Mail folders plug-in, version 088(English)
A launch of this caliber can aptly be called inauguration day. The release of Nokia N97 is the Nseries counter-move that geeks have been waiting for since November. Easily one of the most complete smartphones ever created, the N97 has been haunting Symbian buffs’ dreams for quite a while.

Nokia N97

We’re about to see if this feature-loaded son of a gun is the stuff dreams are made of and if it has the gut to stand up to the best on the market. The 5800 XpressMusic was cheap enough to easily be forgiven a couple of shortcomings but the N97 is not the begging type. Nokia-faithfuls are used to only getting the best treatment, so they won’t settle for less with the Nseries skipper.

Key features

Slide-n-tilt 3.5″ 16M-color resistive touchscreen of 640 x 360 pixel resolution

5 megapixel autofocus camera with dual-LED flash and lens cover (VGA@30fps video recording)

Symbian OS 9.4 with S60 5th edition UI

Slide-out three-row full QWERTY keyboard

ARM 11 434MHz CPU and 128 MB of RAM

Quad-band GSM support and 3G with HSDPA support

Wi-Fi and GPS with A-GPS (plus 3 months of free voice-guided navigation via Ovi Maps)

Digital compass

Class-leading 32GB onboard storage

microSD card slot with microSDHC support

Built-in accelerometer

3.5 mm audio jack

TV out

Stereo FM Radio with RDS

FM transmitter

microUSB and Bluetooth v2.0

Full Flash and Java support for the web browser

microUSB v2.0 and Bluetooth v2.0

Good audio reproduction quality

Main disadvantages

The S60 5th edition UI still has poor ergonomics and is not as thumbable as expected

Camera features are so two-thousand-and-late

No DivX or XviD support out-of-the-box

No smart dialing

Somewhat limited 3rd party software availability

No office document editing (without a paid upgrade)

Obvious from the list above, the Nokia N97 hardly puts anything new on the table. It is however a bold try to fit all of today’s top features under one hood and offer a nice ride at that. This certainly is an ambitious task by itself but the ever-expectant Nseries fans, who always want something new on their next handset, make it even harder. The Nokia N97 will need to be near flawless to get a warm welcome.

Nokia N97 will also be a major test for the still quite young (or immature if you want) S60 5th edition UI. The growing pains were expected and acceptable in the 5800 XpressMusic, but it’s been 8 months since. The time is long enough in mobile phone terms and the market leader is simply expected to have had everything figured by now.

The disappointing N96 does owe Nokia some and the N97 will – among other things – probably have to cover its debts too. Join us on the next page as we take a peek inside the retail box of the new Nseries sovereign and complete our ergonomics rundown.
